The past days have shown us that we all need to do more to secure racial justice for black people.
At Who is Hussain, we are a social justice movement committed to action in order to bring about long term systemic change. We have therefore put together a one-stop-shop list below of organisations to consider getting involved with or donate to in order to further the cause. We have also listed petitions to sign and general resources to ensure that your life going forward is one that prioritises racial equality for black people.
Please get involved and donate generously. It is only through consistent and long-term activism that we will start to combat the virus of prejudice and racism against our black brothers and sisters, in America and beyond.
Organisations in the US
- NAACP Legal Defence Fund – This is one of America’s top legal firms, which is dedicated to fighting for racial justice.
- The Bail Project – TBP is a national nonprofit organisation, which has been set up to “pay bail for people in need, reuniting families and restoring the presumption of innocence”.
- Color of Change – Colour of Change is an impressive organisation. With 1.7 million members, it is America’s largest online racial justice platform. It “leads campaigns that build power for Black communities”.
- Campaign Zero – Campaign Zero is focused on ending police brutality in America, and describes itself as a platform of research-based policy solutions to doing just that.
- Know Your Rights Camp – KYRC is a free campaign started by Colin Kaepernick to “raise awareness on higher education, self-empowerment, and instructions on how to properly interact with law enforcement in various scenarios”.
- RFK Human Rights – Named after Robert F. Kennedy, RFK Human Rights is all about advocating for a more just and peaceful world, and works “alongside local activists to ensure lasting positive change in governments and corporations”.
Minnesota Organisations
For those looking to donate or get involved with local activism in the area where George Floyd was from, we have also included links to organisations from Minnesota.
- Minnesota Freedom Fund – While MFF is not currently accepting funds (as it was flooded with donations in the aftermath of George’s death) it is still worth bearing them in mind in the future. It is a bail fund, committed to educating on the harms of cash bail and pre-trial detention.
- MPD150 – This is an initiative whose aim is to shift the discussion of police violence in Minneapolis towards meaningful structural change.
- Voices for Racial Justice – VRJ is “committed to building power through collective cultural & healing strategies for racial justice across Minnesota using organizing, leadership training, community policy & research”.
- Showing Up for Racial Justice – This is the local Minnesota chapter of a national organisation, whose purpose is to focus on organising white people to act for racial justice.
- Black Visions Collective – Active since 2017, BVC’s aim is to shape a political home for black people across Minnesota.
- Reclaim the Block – Reclaim the Block’s philosophy is seeking community health and safety without police of any kind. It organises Minneapolis community and city council members to move money from the police department into other areas of the city’s budget.
Organisations in the UK
- Runnymede Trust – The UK’s leading independent race equality think tank.
- StopWatch – An organisation focused on research and action for fair and accountable policing.
- Race Justice Network – RJN is a network which is changing negative perceptions of migration and standing up to racism.
- Ubele Initiative – A social enterprise with “a mission to contribute to the sustainability of the African Diaspora community”.
- Resourcing Racial Justice – An organisation of individuals committed to seeking social change. It has established a new UK wide-funding pool to support individuals and communities working towards racial justice.
- Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust – Set up in the name of Stephen Lawrence, who was killed in a racially motivated attack. It has been founded to tackle racial inequality in all forms.
- The Black Curriculum – A social enterprise established to embed black history as a core part of the history curriculum in UK schools.
International Organisations
- Amnesty International – A global human rights organisation, campaigning against injustice and inequality everywhere.
