Over the course of the last few years, a trend of well-timed suicide bombings and targeted killings has been observed across the world during the holy month of Ramadhan. Who are these people who have the gall to massacre innocents during such a blessed month of altruism and self-denial? Why do they terrorise the masses by performing such acts of cruelty resulting in slaughter in the name of Islam?
Thousands of people are displaced because of such atrocities and hence seeking refuge in the safe havens of the world, if there be any, to ensure the safety of their families and loved ones.
As an integral part of this society, it is time to start giving back. Now is the time to act, to stand tall against oppression, to remain harmonious with surrounding communities and contribute toward the welfare of humanity in general.
Who is Hussain is one such campaign that emanates the inspiration that society needs to embrace through the example of Hussain Ibn Ali. This Ramadhan, Who is Hussain launched a global campaign #WhoCares which sought to raise awareness of different inequalities that plague our society by asking the provocative question, Who Cares?
The Who is Hussain campaign in India started off with a humble beginning with just two city chapters in the year 2013. Today, we have expanded significantly and now have representation in over 30 cities across the country. During our #Give campaign in Ramadhan last year, we had distributed ration which would provide 75,000 meals across 18 cities. In light of this, the target for Ramadhan 2017 was initially set at 100,000 meals. However, our representatives and volunteers surpassed this initial target, managing to collect funds for ration distribution equalling 155,000 meals across 29 Indian cities. This included enough funds for 20,776 kilograms of rice and 10,100 kilograms of pulses.
More than 500 volunteers participated in this initiative with commendable zeal and determination. Approximately 50 vehicles were utilised. Rations were distributed in Rohingya refugee camps, old age homes, and orphanages. Embodying the true values and principles of our namesake, ration packets were distributed among the less fortunate people irrespective of religion or caste. The true highlight of the campaign this Ramadhan, however, was the participation of many non-Muslim brothers and sisters, in fundraising and attending our events despite the scorching heat, showing that the values of Hussain are truly for humanity.
They Care and We Care, do you?
