Three years ago, we set out the conditions the people of Gaza were enduring, living under the longest military occupation in history. The long history of marginalisation and persecution of the Palestinian people has endured too long. We are now witnessing state-sanctioned systematic subjugation and starvation. Collective punishment, denying 2 million Palestinians – of which 47% are children – of food, water, fuel and electricity is unacceptable and a flagrant violation of international law.
We uphold the sanctity of life as a sacred value – irrespective of religion or race. The unprecedented attack last weekend, with acts of violence in civilian and residential communities, is deeply tragic. And yet the response from Israel, imposing a siege on the blockaded Gaza Strip, is already resulting in horrendous humanitarian consequences. Nothing justifies the war crimes we are now witnessing.
We must stand in solidarity with those affected and strive to create a better future for all. Responsible leadership necessitates calling for de-escalation, an immediate ceasefire, re-establishing humanitarian access and the upholding of international law. Until the root causes of human rights violations in the region are addressed, we fear this cycle of destruction, devastation and despair will continue.
